THIS IS WHAT YOUR MATRIC RESULTS MEAN
Matric results are the final exams taken by students in Grade 12 in South Africa. These results are used to determine each student's National Senior Certificate grade, which is used for university admissions, work and other academic decisions.
Matric results are one of the most important milestones in your schooling life. 12 years of going to school is determined by your grade 12 results. It is therefore important to understand your matric results. Understanding your matric results will help you make informed decisions about your life post matric, for example your results may determine whether you have to go to university, college, upgrade, repeat matric or work.
Having a clear knowledge of your results will make your journey of applying to higher learning institutions easy and successful. Lack of knowledge of your matric results will lead to poor career decisions, disappointments and delays in setting your goals. Now let's get to business what does your matric results mean?
Firstly, there are 3 pass levels:
1. Higher certificate
2. Diploma
3. Bachelors pass (previously known as an exemption).

HERE ARE THE MATRIC PASS REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH OF THESE LEVELS:
HIGHER CERTIFICATE PASS REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain at least 40% in your Home Language
(this is compulsory)
Must obtain at least 40% in two other subjects,
Must obtain at least 30% for three other subjects.
Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching the higher education institution
Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.
HOW IT'S SHOWN ON THE MATRIC CERTIFICATE/ STATEMENT
"This candidate qualifies for a national senior certificate and has met the minimum requirements for higher certificate study as gazetted for admission fo higher education"
When you have passed with a higher certificate you can apply for higher certificate courses/bridging courses subject to meeting other minimum requirements. You can apply to study in tvet colleges and universities.
DIPLOMA PASS REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain at least 40% for your Home Language, (this is compulsory)
Must obtain at least 40% for three other subjects excluding Life Orientation,
Must obtain at least 30% in the Language of Learning and Teaching of the Higher Education Institution
Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject
Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.
HOW IT'S SHOWN ON THE MATRIC CERTIFICATE/ STATEMENT
"This candidate qualifies for a national senior certificate and has met the minimum requirements for diploma or higher certificate study as gazetted for admission fo higher education"
When you have passed with a diploma you can apply for diploma and higher certificate courses subject to meeting other requirements. You can apply to study in tvet colleges and universities.
BACHELORS DEGREE PASS REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain at least 40% for your Home Language (compulsory)
Must obtain at least 50% for four other subjects excluding Life Orientation,
Must obtain at least 30% in Language of Learning and Teaching the higher education institution
Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject
Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.

When you have passed with a Bachelor you can apply for higher certificate, Diploma and bachelor courses subject to meeting other requirements.
With a Bachelor's pass you can apply to study towards a degree at a university, university of technology, TVET college or any accredited Higher Learning Institution.
